'Sebastian Vettel is faster than what we can see today'
At a time when it seems Sebastian Vettel is only ever coming in for criticism, Alain Prost says the German is a better driver that he what’s showing at the moment.
Vettel has had a nightmare start to the 2020 season, his last with Ferrari.
Told two months prior to the start of the championship that this year’s campaign will be his last with the Scuderia, Vettel had hoped to put himself in the shop window with podium finishes.
Instead his best result to date was his sixth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
While his team-mate Charles Leclerc has bagged two podium results, Vettel has scored just 10 points in what is his worst start to a championship since his first full season with Toro Rosso in 2008.
Last weekend at Silverstone, the German qualified a disappointing P11 for the grand prix and finished one place back in 12th after an early spin and what he believes was a bad strategy call.
It has led to several past Formula 1 drivers calling for Ferrari to drop him.
Jolyon Palmer believes it is getting “more and more toxic by the day” with Vettel “performing really badly” while Gerhard Berger says it would be “best to switch to the 2021 line-ups now”.
However, one former driver is still in Vettel’s corner, Prost.
“It’s sad to see him like that… Can you imagine all the pressure he’s on right now?” he was quoted as saying.
“With what happened last season and in the winter. All these things together, it’s very difficult.
“He is much faster than what we can see today.
“I like Sebastian a lot as a person. Maybe he’s a bit fragile in a certain way because he is a sensitive person.
“Sometimes I suppose he feels bad from this point of view. But he loves racing, he has a passion for F1.”

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto says he is “open” to help Vettel in anyway possible and will discuss giving the driver a new chassis just in case that’s where the problem lies.
He told Motorsport.com: “That’s part of the discussion we have within teams.
“I think we are open if it is something that may help. Why not?
“I think whatever we can do to help is important for us, for Sebastian, and I think from a team point of view and a driver point of view, to try to make better in the next races.
“It is important, so open to do it.
“I will leave it to the driver and the team to discuss and decide.”
