Marko defends Red Bull program after Albon axe | F1 News by PlanetF1

Dr Helmut Marko has defended Red Bull’s junior driver program in the wake of Alex Albon’s demotion to a reserve and development role.

Albon has become the latest driver to be dropped by the Red Bull senior team after they ultimately opted for more experience for the 2021 campaign in the form of Sergio Perez, who was rewarded for a stellar 2020 season which included a memorable win at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

Albon joins the likes of Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly in recent times of being on the wrong end of some ruthless decision-making from the Red Bull team.

But, despite Red Bull’s struggles to fill their second senior seat with a driver from within their own set-up, Marko says the program is still a success.

After nearly 12 years we will work together again, mate. Thank You Christian Horner for this great opportunity.
Helmut Marko, I’m very happy and thankful for the confidence placed in me, I’m going to work very hard to help this team to bring one more Championship #givesyouwings👐 pic.twitter.com/j2cJarBLon

“It’s not always possible to ensure a seamless supply of talent for Formula 1,” Marko told Servus TV, as quoted by Grandpx.news.

“But if the others had such a track record such as ours with their own young drivers, I think they would be very satisfied.

“Even the drivers who did not go to Formula 1 with us still earn their money with racing today – in other words, doing exactly the job they love.”

Marko went on to say that the option of turning back to one of their own drivers is on the table for 2022 and singled out a few names who are coming through the Red Bull ranks.

“If a young driver really matters to us, we have the option for 2022 again,” Marko added.

“With Yuki Tsunoda we have brought another Japanese into Formula 1 after many years and he is super fast.

“We also have Juri Vips and Jehan Daruvala and absolutely good drivers further down from all kinds of nations.”
