Italy reportedly seizes Dmitry and Nikita Mazepin properties worth £87m
Properties worth £87m belonging to Dmitry and ex-Haas driver Nikita Mazepin have been seized by Italy, according to a report.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Haas Formula 1 team were forced to take drastic action regarding their sponsorship from Dmitry Mazepin’s Uralkali firm, and his son Nikita who was driving for the team alongside Mick Schumacher.
Ultimately, Haas cut ties with Uralkali and the Mazepins.
Not long afterwards, both Nikita and Dmitry Mazepin joined a list of Russians facing financial sanctions, aimed at financially penalising wealthy Russians with links to president Vladimir Putin.
And in a new development, Reuters report that according to information they have received from two police sources, Italy has now seized properties from the Mazepins with a value in the region of £87m.
The report states the operation targeted a villa known as ‘Rocky Ram’ located “in the north of the island of Sardinia”.
After the news of his Haas sacking, Mazepin had said he would start an organisation to support Russian athletes who were barred from competitions as a result of the conflict.
And in a recent interview, he addressed the situation for Russian athletes and the fact he was included in the sanctions list.
“I don’t agree with being in the sanctions and I’ve said previously I intend to fight it,” Mazepin told the BBC’s Stephen Sackur.
“Perhaps now is not the right time because if you look at the whole situation that’s happening against athletes in the general case, it’s cancel culture against my country.”
After Haas had removed Mazepin from their 2022 driver line-up, they brought Kevin Magnussen back into the fold, who had last raced in Formula 1 with the team in 2020.
The Danish racer enjoyed something of a fairytale return to the series, qualifying P7 in Bahrain before crossing the line P5 at the season-opener.
A P9 followed in Saudi Arabia, although Magnussen failed to score points at the Australian Grand Prix, a poorly timed Safety Car from his perspective certainly not helping his cause.
