Esteban Ocon: Renault saw more tyre cuts than ever
Esteban Ocon says that after the practice sessions at Silverstone, Renault found more cuts to their tyres than ever before.
Tyre wear was a huge talking point at the British Grand Prix. With just two laps to go, Valtteri Bottas picked up a puncture and ended up dropping out of the points.
The same thing happened to Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton moments later, with the former also missing out on a top 10 finish and the latter nursing his car home to win.
According to Ocon, his team saw signs of the higher than usual tyre wear earlier in the weekend, in the aftermath of the practice sessions.
The Frenchman thinks that it could be down to the removal of a kerb at Turn 13.
“We have seen a lot of cuts and stuff that we normally don’t see in practice,” said Ocon, who finished sixth.
“It is true that Silverstone is probably the toughest circuit for tyres with a high speed and the kerbs. There is a new thing out of Turn 13; Maggots, Becketts, Chapel, this combination of corners.
“At the right-hander, Turn 13 exit, now there is no kerb anymore. Which there was before. So you run in the dirt and then you go on to the kerb, and that could also damage your tyres.”

Shortly before the late tyre failures, Kimi Raikkonen left some debris on track when his front wing failed. Therefore, some believe said debris could have been the cause.
Ocon also thinks that similar debris could have been the cause of the cuts in practice.
“I don’t know if it came from the carbon debris or just the track being very hard with the tyres,” he added.
Regardless, there is talk that, given the failures, Pirelli are considering reverting on their plan to introduce softer tyre compounds for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, especially given that temperatures are set to be higher for the second race at Silverstone.
Despite tyre concerns, it was a positive race for Ocon and Renault. He finished in P6, while Daniel Ricciardo took P4. The results brought them within 10 points of Racing Point in the Constructors’ Championship, and 11 behind Ferrari.
