Fisker PEAR Electric SUV Is Getting Something Called a "Houdini Trunk"
You may have heard of famed automotive designer and CEO Henrik Fisker from his time at BMW, Aston Martin, VLF, or even when he took on Tesla with the Karma. To say it’s a prolific career is an understatement, but Fisker is now ready to take his greatest leap yet—as a mainstream all-electric SUV manufacturer. The newly-minted Fisker Inc. ‘s first SUV, the Ocean, is already headed to production next year with Magna Steyr in Europe. The brand’s follow-up has just been revealed in camouflage with a trick trunk, so say hello to the Fisker PEAR.
Details of the all-electric PEAR SUV come to us from over at Auto Express, which reported on the reveal along with quotes from a previous interview with the CEO teasing what’s been dubbed the “Houdini trunk” feature on the new PEAR. In the report, Fisker tells Auto Express that, “Use of space on a car this size is going to be key. The features and the vehicle are going to be completely different. The way you get into the trunk – I call it the Houdini trunk, because nobody has ever done it that way before.” The executive declined to elaborate until closer to the PEAR’s projected 2024 production date.
In an email to MotorTrend, Fisker provided the same image of the new PEAR SUV for publication, along with a few details:
“The Fisker PEAR is a sporty crossover, smaller than the Fisker Ocean SUV. The Fisker PEAR will have the first-ever Fisker Houdini trunk, an alternative to traditional rear cargo hatches. Intended for a metropolitan lifestyle, Fisker PEAR ‘s interior will offer a new level of storage for its segment.” We’d guess that the vehicle tailgate opening mechanism either disappears into the body somehow, like the BMW Z1 roadster’s doors, or possibly slides atop the roof in some manner, perhaps like the long-dead GMC Envoy XUV (may it transform in peace), but we truly have no other clue beyond the magician’s name.
The email went on to elaborate on the vehicle’s design, with “the beltline and side window area are extremely low, with a large, wraparound windscreen affording a commanding view when driving.” Fisker also confirmed that the PEAR will be available in rear-wheel-drive (single motor) and all-wheel-drive (dual motor) configurations featuring four total levels of option packages when it goes into production. Fisker has previously announced it’s targeting a price point under $30,000 for the PEAR, but didn’t mention that again here.
Finally, Fisker alerted MotorTrend that the PEAR has already been publicly spotted in and around Los Angeles, so we might be getting a better look at it very soon.
