A new Workplace Parking Levy is being considered in the city which would see many business owners hit with fees. Businesses with at least 10 parking spaces will be forced to pay around £550 per space for their employees.

Around 450 to 600 local businesses could be affected by the changes if the scheme is launched in early 2023.

Although the scheme will only hit business owners, employers will be within their right to collect some of the funds back by charging staff.

However, drivers, businesses and local residents now have their say on the changes before they are given the green light.

A 12-week consultation began back in December and will run until March 13, 2022.

The survey will allow individuals to comment on individual pieces of the WPL legislation or the scheme altogether.

Individuals will be required to state whether they are a business owner, employee or a member of the public.

Respondents will also be asked how they usually travel to work as part of the consultation.

This will be split into three sections to determine habits before the pandemic, currently, and looking ahead to the future.

The City Council said: “We now want to hear from you on our detailed business case for a workplace parking levy, which will have an extensive 12-weeks consultation.

“The scheme would require Government approval.

“Close working with local businesses during 2022 would be carried out to prepare for its introduction in 2023.

“The workplace parking levy has the potential to help Leicester lead the way on global environmental challenges and transform the city into an outstanding place to live and work where high quality, user-friendly and affordable options for people to travel by bus, bike and foot are available across a growing city.
