Jonathan Barbara, Managing Director at Parkers MOT said older cars risk failing the MOT emissions test as a result of the new petrol. He warned his own historic BMW failed after checking his vehicle on his emissions analyser.

He said the new petrol does not run as efficiently as the older fuel which was behind the issues.

Speaking to, he said: “I don’t think MOT-wise it will affect cars greatly.

“Apart from the fact that if you have got an older car and it is not running as efficiently as it would be.

“Hence, it would fail the MOT on the emissions test.“I have a classic car, I’ve got a 1986 BMW, even though the Government website says it’s ok to use E10. If I put E10 in it, it runs like a dog.

“I stuck it on my emissions analyser and it would have failed an MOT test.“So there you go, it doesn’t run efficiently.”

New emissions rules were introduced in May 2018 as part of an overhaul of the UK MOT test.

Stricter rules were put into place to punish vehicles that were running inefficiently in a bid to reduce vehicle emissions.

The rules state cars must not exceed the emissions restrictions for diesel or petrol engines.

According to experts at Holts Auto, issues affecting vehicle emissions are treated as “major” or “dangerous” under the new guidelines.

This will see cars immediately fail their test and could prevent owners even driving home with their vehicles.

The RAC has previously said car performance is linked to your vehicle’s emissions.

They warned a clean car would likely increase fuel economy and be cheaper to run.
