Despite widespread criticism Greater Manchester’s clean air zone is set to launch on May 31, 2022, with non-compliant cars being charged daily to drive in the area. In response to the car tax scheme, around 100 furious drivers took to the M60 on Sunday and held a “go-slow” protest to highlight the impact it will have on van drivers.
The motorists who took part in the protest called on the local Government to cancel the proposed rules, saying it would cost some drivers more than £2,000 a year.
This comes at a time when energy bills continue to rise, with drivers being warned of further car tax changes coming in April.
Express.co.uk readers have reacted to the new charges with anger, saying that cars which are road legal should not be charged extra in certain areas.
One reader, Gezzer, said: “These vehicles pass an MOT which states they are fit to drive on UK roads.
“So why are local councils invalidating a lawfully obtained MOT for these vehicles…”
Another user, going by the nickname CHiPs, agreed, adding: “Come on folks we all know it’s a scam to steal our money.
“You take your car for a ‘strict’ MOT test which includes emissions.
“That pass certificate allows you to drive on UK roads.

“What these councils are doing is moving the goalposts to make sure the car fails their fudged set of figures.”
A third reader said: “What happens if you live in the edge of the zone and have to drive through it just to get to your destination?
“These states within a state have to end. We are one nation.
“We pay road tax [Vehicle Excise Duty] and fuel duty and that should be it.”
