2023 Genesis G90 Gets 48V Mild Hybrid With Electric Supercharger

Maybe the Genesis G90 isn’t powerful enough for you. If so, we have good news: The 2023 G90’s already powerful  twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 is getting a serious upgrade in the horsepower department. The company is bringing over its MHEV (mild hybrid) setup, which adds 48-volt architecture to support an electric supercharger. The result? A 45-pony bump to 420 in total, first spotted by Car and Driver in some EPA certification documents.  

This all makes sense, as the ’23 G90 represents the end of the line for the 5.0-liter V-8, which was more expensive than the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 and didn’t offer a whole lot power. Both motors are dead now, and the ’23 will arrive with an upgraded 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 shared with other recently redone Genesis models, like the G80 3.5T we just tested. It makes 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque—damn close to the old V-8’s torque output and not far off on horsepower.

Add in the electric supercharger, and it makes sense that the V-8 is toast. The twincharged, up-volted 3.5 matches the V-8 in pony count and beats it slightly in the EPA fuel milage numbers game. The MHEV features standard AWD and posts a 17 city, 24 highway, and 20 combined rating—which matches the 2022 G90 AWD 3.3’s figures exactly and also beats the V-8 in all categories. It’s not far off the regular 2023 3.5T model, too, which comes in at 18 city, 26 highway, and 21 combined.

So while opting for the G90 MHEV’s hybrid system won’t save you any gas, it does offer a big horsepower bump for less of a penalty than the old V-8 did. That seems like progress to us.

Note that we initially expected this MHEV engine not to arrive stateside. It was pegged for the long-wheelbase model only, a version we were (and are) not getting. But Genesis has decided that the stubbier G90s that we get here should be graced with the MHEV, too. So that’s good news for the horsepower junkies jonesing for a G90 with the greatest get-up and go.
