A Toyota Corolla hot hatch on April Fools' Day? You better believe it!

It’s easy to tell a car’s significance by how much is released before its reveal. Typically, a manufacturer needing attention will churn out endless teasers and previews, desperate for the hype that just won’t come. And those with a car guaranteed to excite customers don’t say very much at all, because the anticipation has already reached fever pitch organically. You can guess which kind of car the GR Corolla is.
Toyota has announced its ‘all-new GR Sports car’ will be revealed in the United States on Thursday, with nothing more than times and a couple of a preview images. But that’s all this new car needs, such is the roll Toyota is currently on; we’re reporting it, and plenty of others will be, because in 2022 it’s right to be eager about a new Toyota performance car. The times released are interesting, in fact, suiting both North America and Japan but not Europe; a 9:30pm EST in the US is 10:30am JST on April 1st. It’s 2:30am British Summer Time.
Still, can’t please everyone. And this new Toyota GR is likely to have added significance in America, as the latest teaser pics confirm it as having GR-Four four-wheel drive, just like the Yaris. Which wasn’t offered over there, despite the market having gone wild for cars like the Subaru WRX, VW Golf R and Ford Focus RS. A fast, 4WD Toyota Corolla sounds tailor made for that market. Toyota even has its own website lamenting the Yaris’s lack of availability and previewing the new car: ‘While GR Yaris isn’t coming to the U.S., perhaps it’s time the U.S. got a Toyota hot hatch to call its own. One that continues to push the boundaries of performance. And one that can only come from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. Are you with us?’
Given the UK market is fairly fond of cars like the Golf and Focus as well, a great GR Corolla would make an impact over here – just look what happened with the Yaris. Expect full details come Friday; just maybe not at 2:30am…
