Rivian patents a bolt-on low-range gearbox for its EVs
The bolt-on part would have to be fitted to each motor, which could make it an expensive option.
EV startup, Rivian is said to be working on a new bolt-on low-range gearbox for its future EVs. According to reports, the company has patented the new tech, which could help improve the off-roading prowess of its R1S SUV & R1T pickup truck.
Reports state that the bolt-on mini gearbox attaches directly to every drive unit. The bolt-on part is said to be like portal axles, only removable, and comes with a variable ratio between 1.5:1 and 5:1. The mini gearbox from Rivian is said to use a planetary gearset and an actuator to engage and disengage the low-range.
The new low-range gearbox will allow Rivian EVs to run at a much lower speed while also having advanced cooling to keep them running for long durations. However, reports state that the bolt-on part would have to be fitted to each motor, which could make it an expensive option.
Having said that, the bolt-on part is still in its patent stage, and whether Rivian will actually offer it on their EVs is yet to be confirmed.
