Hyundai Set to Unveil Its Santa Cruz Small Pickup

Hyundai released the first images of its Santa Cruz compact pickup that is going on sale this year and said the truck’s world premiere is scheduled for April 15.

The four-door truck shares a platform with the new Tucson crossover, so it’s riding on a unibody platform rather than a full frame. The company said the short cargo bed in fact is meant to represent blending a crossover and a pickup truck. Hyundai calls the Santa Cruz a “sport adventure vehicle” rather than a pickup.

We first saw a concept version of the truck at the 2015 Detroit auto show. Details will be revealed on April 15 but the company said it will have a “bold yet sophisticated design, powerful and efficient powertrain options, a flexible open bed for gear, cutting-edge connectivity and a highly maneuverable all-wheel-drive platform that is equally at home in urban and adventure-focused environments.

“Our customers will wonder just how they managed before owning one,” said Hyundai North America boss Jose Munoz.

The truck goes into production this summer at the company’s Alabama plant where Hyundai builds the Tucson, Santa Fe, Elantra, and Sonata.
